NUTEC: Engineering for Thermal Insulation

Learn how NUTEC's Applications Engineering and R&D Laboratory work together to create customized, reliable, and validated thermal solutions based on real-world operating conditions (or actual operating conditions).

Not all thermal solutions are the same. While some suppliers only focus on providing materials, at NUTEC, we have built a model where engineering and science work together to solve real-world problems.

From thermal diagnostics to laboratory validation, our proposal integrates technology, experience, and technical rigor that boost the performance of our customers' processes.

Led by an expert team that acts as a bridge between the commercial area and manufacturing plants, the Applications Engineering and Technical Support area has become a strategic technical partner for companies in Mexico, the United States, and other regions.

Its mission is clear: to transform complex needs into precise, reliable, and viable thermal solutions.

A Bridge Between the Client's Problem and the Ideal Solution

The process begins with the very first contact with the client. While many companies only offer products, at NUTEC we provide comprehensive, no-cost consultation where engineering plays a central role.

Each project begins with:

  • Diagnostic assessment of the client's thermal process.
  • Review of temperatures, chemistry, and operating conditions.
  • Analysis of received diagrams, drawings, or technical information.
  • Data validation and thermal surveys (or thermal measurements) when necessary.

This level of detail allows us to determine which materials, thicknesses, densities, anchors, and designs are truly suitable for the client's application. Each project receives a unique number that enables historical tracking and facilitates future purchases or adjustments.

Custom-Made Solutions: More Than Products, Applied Engineering

At NUTEC, we distinguish ourselves by our ability to offer completely customized solutions, thanks to the flexibility of our products and our team's deep technical understanding.

1. Modules & Macromodules

Every installation is unique. Even if two furnaces are similar, their conditions are never identical. Our team adjusts:

  • Module size
  • Anchor type
  • Density and thickness
  • Distribution and installation design

For macromodules, we also develop the necessary detailed engineering drawings so that plants can manufacture pieces perfectly adapted to each project.

2. Vacuum-Formed Shapes and Coatings

When the process requires it, Engineering determines areas where it is appropriate to use vacuum-formed shapes, such as rings or seals, to withstand critical temperatures or aggressive conditions. Furthermore, we define:

  • Type of protective coating
  • Calculation of wet material quantities
  • Combined installation strategy (module + blanket + coating)

3. Custom Thermal Jackets (NPC)

In NUTEC Protective Concepts (NPC) projects, every component is designed completely custom-made. The Applications Engineering area is responsible for defining the technical requirements, validating compliance with operating conditions, and ensuring manufacturing feasibility for the correct development of the product engineering.

The Scientific Backing Behind Every Recommendation: Research and Development (R&D)

NUTEC's technical consultation is directly supported by the R&D laboratory, where specialized tests are performed to guarantee that every proposed solution is reliable, safe, and validated according to actual operating conditions.

Among the most relevant tests are:

  • Chemical Analysis to analyze samples, detect abnormalities, and provide options based on process needs.
  • Linear Shrinkage, which is key for designing installations without thermal leaks and for validating maximum use temperatures.
  • Settlement Volume to characterize engineering fibers and select the appropriate one for vacuum-formed shapes.
  • Modulus of Rupture (MOR), which determines the mechanical strength of vacuum-formed shapes.
  • Viscosity of Wet Products, necessary to ensure their correct application in the field.
  • Pilot Tests, where new formulations are validated before production, ensuring they meet the required physical and chemical characteristics.

Furthermore, R&D plays an essential role when it is necessary to diagnose failures in the field or analyze materials installed by third parties. A recent example demonstrates this:

A client was facing severe thermal blanket degradation in their furnaces after only a few weeks of use. The R&D team analyzed the installed fiber, a material not supplied by NUTEC, and determined that it did not meet the necessary specifications for that process.

Based on the diagnostic assessment:

  • An appropriate blanket for the actual process temperature was recommended.
  • A specialized coating was added for adverse atmospheres.

The result: zero failures since the new installation and an immediate client request to replicate the solution in more furnaces.

A Key Differentiator: Agile, Transparent Service for All Project Sizes

While many companies in the same industry that only prioritize large projects, at NUTEC every project matters, regardless of its size, complexity, or immediate economic potential.

This approach is reflected in:

  • Fast and well-substantiated solutions.
  • Direct communication between engineering and the client when necessary.
  • Transparency regarding scope, limitations, and recommendations.
  • Constant internal collaboration among sales, plant, and R&D.

The department’s philosophy is clear:

“All clients deserve the same quality of consultation. Our goal is to be a technical partner for any thermal insulation need.” — Christian Tavira, Applications Engineering and Technical Support Manager
